CHICAGO (AP) -- Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart will host a so-called guns summit across state lines later this week to discuss safety initiatives, violence and the flow of firearms from Indiana into Illinois.
Dart's spokesman Frank Bilecki tells The Associated Press that the summit will take place Friday in Gary, Ind. Those invited include Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, Gary Police Chief Wade Ingram and Lake County Sheriff John Buncich in Indiana.
Law enforcement leaders have been invited to the summit characterized as a "productive and long overdue session."
The University of Chicago Crime Lab says nearly 20 percent of the guns recovered by Chicago police from 2008 to 2012 were purchased in Indiana. That's the second largest source for recovered firearms next to Cook County.
