LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say local thieves have been targeting an unusual auto part and getting away with it so far.
Thieves have broken into several dozen cars recently. In addition to taking car radios and other valuables inside the cars, the suspects have also stolen batteries.
Dave's Towing on Poplar Level Road was one of the hardest hit locations. The suspects cut the fence of the tow lot and took batteries from more than 30 cars.
"This lot is lit up like a football field at night and it has 16 cameras on it and it don't deter them at all," said lot owner David Jones. "They just come in and take what they want."
Investigators believe they have an idea of what the thieves are doing with the stolen car batteries.
"We're under the impression that they are scrapping the batteries," said LMPD Sgt. Clayton Elliott. "Some of the batteries are probably being recycled."
Jones captured the suspects on surveillance video, and police are working to identify the suspects.
Anyone with information about the battery thefts is asked to call the LMPD crime tipline at 574-LMPD. Callers can remain anonymous.
