LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Orangutans at the Louisville Zoo have been checking out iPad technology through the zoo's Apps for Apes program.
The iPads help the animals communicate with their trainers and learn new behaviors. One orangutan, named Bella, has been working with musical apps, including a drum and a xylophone.
The zoo says the most popular apps are interactive ones with bright colors and a variety of sounds.
Assistant Mammal Curator Jane Anne Franklin tells WDRB News, "It's just another piece of icing on the cake for our animals and the more that we can add to that and expand the apps they have, the better we can interact with them and the better quality of life we can give them."
The trainers say the Apps for Apes program also brings awareness to the fact that orangutans are an endangered species.
