Indiana one step closer to helping schools pay for classroom police officers

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Indiana is one step closer to helping schools pay to put police officers in the classroom.  A state Senate committee approved a bill this afternoon.

It would set up a two-year matching grant program allowing schools up to $50,000 a year.  The program would encourage districts to hire police officers who've undergone extra training as school resource officers and buy safety equipment.

The plan now goes to the full Senate.
