Indiana prepares to go another round with feds

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana leaders are gearing up for a new battle with Washington over how to expand Medicaid and comply with the federal health care law.

Republican Gov. Mike Pence's decision to reject a traditional Medicaid expansion is the latest salvo from a state that has landed in court in recent years over efforts to defund Planned Parenthood and crack down on illegal immigration.

The fights with Washington have created an interesting dilemma for lawmakers as they decide how to pick their battles.

Tea party activists have forced Senate President Pro Tem David Long to show his opposition to Washington this session after he bottled up legislation seeking to void the health care law.

Long says he'll try to enlist 33 other state Legislatures to call a constitutional convention on the law.
