LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Two apartments were heavily damaged by fire early this morning in Okolona.

Firefighters were called to the apartments in the 3700 block of Chateau Lane near Preston Highway just before 7 a.m. When they arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and flames.

Everyone made it out safely, including two pet canaries -- Pete and Tuty -- found in one of the apartments after the flames were extinguished.

Fire Marshal Mike Allendorf says the fire was contained to two units thanks to a firewall. Officials say they now know where the fire originated, but weren't immediately sure of the cause.

Several other units also suffered heavy water damage.

We'll bring you more information as soon as it becomes available.
