LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- The stroke center at U of L Hospital receives a distinction only a handful of facilities in the country have.
It's the first hospital in Kentucky and the 20th in the country to earn the advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center designation from the Joint Commission. It covers hospitals with the most advanced equipment and staff to treat complex stroke cases.
University Hospital CEO James Taylor said, "We have an amazing team of physicians, nurses, and staff who have come together, worked very hard to make sure we provide the very best care for patients who are suffering from stroke."
Hospital officials say the certification will reach across Kentucky and southern Indiana because 50 hospitals have transferred patients to the stroke center over the last year.
