Corydon, Ind. (WDRB) -- A herd of deer wreaked havoc on a southern Indiana shopping plaza, breaking glass windows and causing panic among some shoppers.
During the incident, two deer died - one struck by a car, another after running into a glass storefront. Firefighters from the Harrison County Fire Department spent time Saturday afternoon hosing off the sidewalk and sweeping up broken glass.
"We got called to several deer in the parking lot (that were) out of control," said Lt. Chris Walden of the Harrison County Sheriff's Department.
Katie Hall, a Fiesta Hair stylist, witnessed the incident. "All of the sudden we just heard a lot of really loud noises and then there were like ten deer running up and down the strip."
Katie Hall wasn't laughing as she watched shoppers run -- seeking refuge in her hair salon.
"It was crazy they were running to all the windows. And they went over to the Fashion Bug," said Hall.
Jerrad Simon, another witness, said: "It's crazy there was people screaming and all that."
The only moment of humor came from the firefighters who were laughing about the deer that busted through the glass door of the Dollar Tree and made its way through the store and out a back door.
Hall said an employee of the store wasn't laughing. She was shaken up by the incident.
"She was crying her eyes out. She said it knocked out about 10 shelves. It was just going crazy," Hall said.
"It is the high talk of the plaza. We've had several people wanted to know what was going on," said Walden.
Luckily, he said, no humans were hurt. Authorities believe the deer invaded the shopping plaza after crossing the highway from a nearby wooded area.
