SLIDESHOW: OUR COUNTY SHELBY COUNTY: Talon Winery and Tasting - WDRB 41 Louisville News

SHELBY COUNTY, KY (WDRB) -- A Kentucky Proud winery is making a name for itself.  In Shelbyville off of Interstate 64, you'll find the Talon Winery Tasting Room. It used to be an old farmhouse. But back in 2009, the Talon Winery owners turned it into a tasting room. The ceiling looks like the inside of a wine barrel.

Katie Pryor, a Talon Winery server, says, "The ceiling is very gorgeous. In the springtime, the trees are all blooming. It's a very pretty area, nice and peaceful and quiet and right off the interstate."

On weekends, this has become a popular destination. Customers have a chance to try different wines that Talon has to offer.  Pryor says, "We think we're the best kept secret because a lot of people in Shelby County actually haven't been here. It's more people from the outside coming in."

Outside, the scenic covered porch overlooks a five-acre limestone quarry lake. Bridal showers and even baby showers are often held here. There is also a gift shop.

Kerry Jolliffe, the Talon winemaker, says, "The farm was purchased in '98 by Harriet Allen and Charlie Tackett. That's how the name Talon came to be, they combined Tackett and Allen."

Tackett was a Fayette Circuit Court Judge and Allen was his wife. The family still owns the business today. The winery opened in the summer of 2004.

The wine is actually made in Lexington where grapes, when in season, are grown on a picturesque hill. Elevation is key.  Jolliffe says, "We're one of the highest spots around here. In spring, when you can get late frost or cold mornings, our vines are not as affected because they are higher up and not down in those low cold areas."

Winemaking is a very hands-on process. Jolliffe says he makes sure his wines are really smooth and easy to drink.

Jolliffe says his wines are put in Kentucky barrels, "I  try to get a few new barrels each year, so wine is going into brand new barrels, some in once used barrels, twice used, some three times."

The finished product can be sampled at its tasting rooms in Lexington or in Shelby County.

The Talon Winery sells 16 different wines. They range in price from about $12 to $50.
