Former operator of Heavenly Angels daycare pleads guilty to fraud

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The former operator of the Heavenly Angels daycare center has pleaded guilty to theft and fraud.

In court this morning, Lavonia Lewars admitted to stealing more than $205,000 from a state daycare program.

She billed the program for more children than actually attended her centers.

The scheme was uncovered after Lewars closed Heavenly Angels following a traffic accident that killed one of her workers and injured several children.

Lewars faces a 10-year prison term and restitution of the money she stole.

Lewars and her attorney had no comment as they left the courtroom.

Judge Barry Willett will formally sentence Lewars on April 30.
