LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police say they've arrested a Louisville man who simply let his two pit bulls die.
According to an arrest warrant, it happened on or around Feb. 3. Authorities got an anonymous tip that 23-year-old Delvon Smith's two dogs were dead.
When authorities arrived at Smith's home on Hemlock Street, near Dumesnil Street, they allegedly saw one dead dog inside a dog house, but didn't see the other dog.
Officers left to obtain a search warrant, then returned to the home.
When they came back, they allegedly found two dogs "chained and frozen dead inside their dog houses."
The dogs were seized and taken to Metro Animal Services. From there, they were taken to Lexington for a necropsy -- a type of autopsy for animals.
Police say Smith was the licensed owner of the dogs, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
He was taken into custody on Saturday evening at his home. Police say that as he was being arrested, he spontaneously told officers that "he did not provide bedding or protection from the elements for the animals, other than the plastic dog houses."
He also allegedly admitted that once he saw that the first dog had died, he left the other dog in the dog house for four days before the bodies of both animals were discovered.
Police have charged Smith with two counts of torturing a dog, resulting in serious physical injury or death.
