Animal rights group holds pig protest at Louisville Walmart

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A giant inflatable pig greeted shoppers at a local Walmart today.

The pig was a prop for Mercy For Animals -- an animal rights group that staged a protest at the store Monday. The group claimed that an undercover investigation at one of the retailer's main pork suppliers exposed abuse of pigs.

Activists say pregnant pigs are put into tiny crates.

"We're just calling on Walmart to follow the lead of Costco, Kroger, Safeway and its other competitors in committing to do away with their cruel," said Phil Letten, a spokesman for Mercy for Animals.

The group says the practice is banned in nine U.S. states and in the European Union.

We reached out to Walmart for comment, but have not heard back from the company.
