Industrial hemp proposal may not come up for floor vote in Kentucky House

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo says he does not know whether a floor vote will come up on a proposal that would allow industrial hemp farming in Kentucky.

That would be contingent upon the federal government lifting restrictions on growing hemp.  Kentucky would be able to license growers if that happened.

The House Agriculture and Small Business Committee is expected to vote Wednesday, and Chairman Tom McKee of Cynthiana says he expects the measure to pass.

But even if that committee approves it, it faces an uncertain future in the House.  Police have raised concerns that hemp fields could be used to camouflage illegal marijuana.

Agriculture Commissioner James Comer insists that hemp could be an economic boon for Kentucky.
