Shelby Co. is home to several alpaca farms

Posted: Updated:

SHELBYVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Besides thoroughbreds and show horses, Shelby County is home to about a half-dozen small alpaca farms.

Larry Roach raises 19 alpaca on his farm outside Simpsonville.  Alpacas can be gentle pets, but are also raised for breeding and their thick coats.

In a couple of months when the weather warms up, Roach and other alpaca farmers will do their annual shearing.

Alpacas are native to South America but fit right in here in Kentucky, with its temperate climate and good grass to graze.
