NEWPORT, Ky. (AP) -- A northern Kentucky woman serving 18 years in prison for the shooting death of her husband in Fort Thomas is seeking a new trial.
Cheryl McCafferty appeared Friday in Campbell Circuit Court for a brief hearing on her request.
The Kentucky Enquirer reported Special Judge Robert McGinnis barred Campbell Commonwealth's Attorney Michelle Snodgrass and her office from being part of a hearing to determine if McCafferty had effective counsel. Snodgrass prosecuted McCafferty and may be called as witness.
McGinnis was assigned the case after Campbell Circuit Judge Julie Reinhardt Ward rescued herself.
A jury convicted the 48-year-old McCafferty of first-degree manslaughter for the killing of 44-year-old Robert McCafferty. Cheryl McCafferty lost a parole bid in January 2011. Her next parole hearing will be in January 2016.
