LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Authorities say a Louisville man who was about to be placed on home incarceration made the mistake of stealing a corrections officer's car keys -- and now he's going to jail instead.

According to an arrest report, it happened just before 7:30 on Saturday morning.

Authorities say 38-year-old Omar Dorantes had been charged with contempt of court, but was about to leave the Hall of Justice to begin serving a home incarceration sentence.

But instead of just leaving as scheduled, authorities say Dorantes stole a corrections officer's jacket from a workstation. He then allegedly walked into an unoccupied office and disposed of the jacket under a desk, but not before removing the officer's knife and personal car keys from the jacket.

Dorantes then left the Hall of Justice to return home.

The officer later found his jacket under the desk, according to the arrest report, but realized immediately that the car keys and knife were missing.

When corrections staff reviewed the Hall of Justice security cameras, they allegedly saw Dorantes taking the jacket.

Authorities later drove to Dorantes' home and confronted him about the missing items. Dorantes allegedly denied stealing them, alleging that another suspect took them. The items weren't found in Dorantes' home, but were later discovered under flooring in a lobby at the Hall of Justice.

Again, Dorantes denied stealing the items, or hiding them under the flooring.

Authorities didn't believe him -- and he was taken to Metro Corrections. He's now charged with tampering with physical evidence and theft by unlawful taking.
