Cash-strapped fire department to hold fundraiser

Posted: Updated:

BICKNELL, Ind. (AP) -- A fire department in need of money to replacing aging equipment is going door to door to raise money because its city doesn't have the cash.

The Bicknell Fire Department in southwestern Indiana decided to take the step after declining tax revenues forced city leaders to slash departments and lay off workers.

Chief Tom Houghland tells the Vincennes Sun-Commercial the protective clothing and breathing equipment used by the 14-member volunteer department is nearing the end of its life span. Firefighters decided to seek donations in exchange for coupons for a free family portrait.

Mayor John Flickinger says he's pleased the department is being proactive about fundraising and keeping its members safe.
