Police investigating after woman dies in jail

Posted: Updated:

LONDON, Ky. (AP) -- Police in southern Kentucky are investigating the death of a 28-year-old woman while she was incarcerated at the Laurel County Detention Center.

Deputy Laurel County Coroner Darren Kilburn told The Advocate-Messenger that autopsy results for Cortney Beldon Hensley of Danville should be available within a week.

A jail staff member found Hensley "in distress" on March 9 after she had been held for six days on charges of obtaining a controlled substance without a doctor's prescription.

Officials unsuccessfully tried to revive her; Hensley was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Medical Center in London.

Citing medical privacy laws, officials declined to further elaborate on the nature of Hensley's health problems.
