Program targeted towards juvenile offenders expands

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Every year just over 6,000 juvenile offenders are processed through the Jefferson County Judicial system.

Restorative Justice Louisville, or RJL, recently announced its plans to expand the program.

RSL uses a model where victims of juvenile crime are able to meet with their young offenders and work out an agreement for making amends.

The pilot program started in LMPD's 2nd division, but it eventually expanded to the 1st and 4th divisions.

"As a former prosecutor I'm interested in something that works, and when you see how this has worked in other places in the world it's exciting to think that we are trying this in Louisville," said Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Angela McCormick Bisig.

RJL estimates that it costs about $1,100 for juvenile offenders to go through the restorative process versus $3,100 through the traditional juvenile court system.
