LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- School boards across Kentucky can now choose to increase the dropout age after Ky. Gov. Steve Beshear signed new legislation into law today.
If more than 55 percent of districts raise the age from 16 to 18, then the entire state must follow suit within four years.
Supporters say if the law goes into effect across the Bluegrass it will prevent some 6,000 teens from quitting school early each year.
Fifteen other states already ban students from dropping out of school until they're 18.
The governor's signature ends a five-year battle by some lawmakers to pass the measure.
