LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- He is a business owner who wants to make a difference in his community. Turan Rogers is well known around the Shawnee neighborhood. He grew up in the area and owns a barber shop near 41st and West Market in West Louisville.
He says business is good and he is grateful for the support from the community. "We have generations of families who have been supporting me since I've been here," says Rogers.
After 20 years Rogers decided to branch out and open a convenience store in the front of his shop. The store opened March 11th and is called The Second Time Around, although the outdoor sign has yet to be installed.
"It is uplifting and thrilling just to see it come together from a dream," says Rogers.
It's a dream with good business sense. Rogers signed a deal with Krispy Krunchy Chicken for it to put in a counter for food sales.
In just the two weeks the store has been open, business has been stronger than expected and Rogers attributes that to the popularity of the ready-to-eat food. "Of the sixty stores I have opened during the past four years, this is probably the top selling one on a daily basis already," says Harry Dennery, market partner for Krispy Krunchy Chicken in the Louisville market.
Rogers has worked very hard to build an attractive store that is appealing to the eye both inside and outside. "I want to uplift the community," he says. "You hear so much bad news about what goes on in the West End that people think they can't have something nice here, so I am going to prove them wrong."
Rogers say he plans to donate a portion of his sales to various charities. "Turan is a wonderful young man," says Dennery, "who has worked very hard his whole career and has worked very hard to get this store open."
Rogers opened his new store without any help from the government. He relied on a bank loan and financial assistance from his family and long time friends.
These are busy times for Rogers. In addition to running the barber shop, opening the new convenience store he has recently become engaged to Sherrie Williams.
He is not only a hard worker but appears to be a bit of a romantic.
"I just got engaged February 14th, Valentine's Day," he smiles.
