LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- MAC Construction and Excavating Inc. was presented with the "Business of the Year Award" by One Southern Indiana Chamber of Commerce at its 25th Anniversary ceremony held on March 12, 2013.

The award is presented to businesses with more than 25 employees.

A crowd of over 500 were in attendance. This category had the largest number of applicants, which included MAC, Park Community Federal Credit Union and United Mail, LLC.

MAC was founded in 1980.  Recently, MAC successfully transitioned leadership and ownership from first generation owners, Victor & Jeannie Unruh, to their two sons, Travis Unruh and Chad Unruh.

Over the last 30 years MAC has diversified its operations, from excavation, site development, and underground water and sewer utilities to streetscapes, treatment plants and pump stations, parks & athletic fields, and much more.
Six years ago MAC invested in an asphalt plant in Jeffersonville, enhancing its asphalt paving operations, and increasing competitiveness on bids for roads, highways & bridges. In the last 10 years MAC has more than doubled in size and now has approximately 250 employees, making MAC one of the largest contractors in the area.
MAC is recognized by several trade organizations for its stellar safety record, winning the highest national safety award from the National Utility Contractors Association last summer. MAC earned the Associated Builders & Contractors prestigious National Eagle Award for its innovative and challenging work on the $8 million Warnock Interchange Improvements adjacent to the U of L campus. MAC is the only contractor in Kentucky and Indiana in the history of the award to be so honored.
Both Travis and Chad had an opportunity to address the crowd and in their remarks paid tribute to Vic and Jeannie, and the foundation they built for the success of MAC. They also emphasized that "This award is a testament to our employees and the great team of individuals surrounding us every day."
