Pope Francis celebrates first Good Friday as leader of Catholic church

Posted: Updated:

LOUISIVLLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Pope Francis celebrates his first Good Friday as the leader of the Catholic church.

The Pope lay on the altar in prayer, then had help to get back on his feet.

The service at St. Peter's Basilica included a reading of the Lord's Passion from the Gospels and a candle-lit "way of the cross" procession.

Pope Francis washed and kissed the feet of two young women at a juvenile detention center in Rome yesterday.

It was a departure from church rules that restrict the Holy Thursday ritual to men.
