ATLANTA (WDRB) -- ESPN is reporting that a source close to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame voting has confirmed that Rick Pitino has won election to the hall, in his second year as a finalist.
A friend of Pitino's confirmed the news with WDRB and two University of Louisville basketball players said that Pitino told the players this morning that the ESPN report was true. NBA guard Gary Payton, former UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian and former Houston coach Guy Lewis are also expected to be members of the 2013 class.
An official announcement on the 2013 class will be made Monday in Atlanta, a date on which Pitino hopes to be coaching his University of Louisville basketball team in the NCAA Championship game.
Pitino, 60, is making his seventh Final Four appearance, where he is seeking to become the first coach to lead two schools to a national title. He already is the first to take three programs to a Final Four, and the second coach to take two different programs to back-to-back Final Fours.
