Conn. gov faults gun lobbyists over restrictions

Posted: Updated:

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has criticized gun industry lobbyists, just days after he signed into law restrictions on weapons and large-capacity magazines.

Malloy said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union" that lobbyists want to make sure the industry sells as many guns as possible even to the mentally ill and those with criminal backgrounds. "They don't care. They want to sell guns," he said.

Robert Crook, executive director of the Connecticut Coalition of Sportsmen, a lobbying group, said Malloy's comment was political and absolutely false.

Malloy signed legislation on Thursday that adds more than 100 firearms to the state's assault weapons ban, effective immediately.

The governor and lawmakers acted in response to the December shooting deaths of 20 children and six educators at an elementary school in Newtown.
