Keith Kaiser goes in search of the best Derby Burger with the Kentucky Beef Council

Posted: Updated:

The Kentucky Derby Festival's quest to find the best hamburger recipe has been narrowed to four. The finalists of the "Derby Burger Challenge" recipe contest competed in the finals.

All the finalists are from Louisville: Peter Herbener's Jennie Benedict Burger recipe, Margaret Hill and her BLT Burger with Russian Dressing, Bill Keyer's Bourbon Bacon and Blue burger, and Melissa Richardson's South of the Border burger.

The Festival received 259 entries after the competition opened on March 11. The champion was determined based on three judging factors - taste, appearance and creativity.

And the winner is... Bill Keyer's Bourbon Bacon and Blue burger.

The Derby Burger recipe will be featured as the Local Legendary Burger at Hard Rock Cafe' Louisville in April and May, recognized in Louisville-area and Lexington-area Kroger stores and samples will be featured at the Kentucky Derby Festival's new BeerFest presented by American Founders Bank.

Bill Keyer also receive VIP tickets to Thunder Over Louisville and a concert at Kroger's Fest-a-Ville, as well as a $100 gift certificate to Kroger and a grilling package from Kentucky Beef Council.

From March 11 to April 24, all purchasers of fresh ground beef at any of the Kentuckiana Kroger stores (including Lexington locations) will receive a message at checkout (on the bottom of the receipt).
