Downtown bridge construction to begin July 1

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Construction of the new downtown bridge and the approaches to it is set to begin July 1.  Drivers will see more evidence of the work about to get underway in the coming weeks.

The new bridge will be next to the Kennedy Bridge and is expected to open in April of 2016.  It will carry both northbound and southbound traffic through December 2016 as the Kennedy Bridge is renovated.  When the work on the Kennedy is complete, the new bridge will carry six lanes of traffic northbound over the Ohio River.  The Kennedy Bridge will carry six lanes southbound.

You'll be able to see preparations for the construction soon, as workers perform surveys, make test borings, and remove signs and put up fences in safety zones.

The Kentucky Transportation Department and the Walsh Design Build Team say much of Waterfront Park will remain open during construction.  That includes the Great Lawn and Big Four Bridge, along with the terrace lawn in Jeffersonville, Ind.  They say they will work closely with planners for the Kentucky Derby Festival and other events held in those areas.

Walsh officials say two lanes of interstate traffic will remain open in each direction all during construction.  But the ramp from eastbound I-64 to southbound I-65 will close around July 1 and stay closed through the middle of 2016.

A Downtown Crossing Open House is set for Wednesday, May 8 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Mellwood Art Center.  For more information on the project, go to: www.kyinbridges.com.
