Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE (WDRB) -- President Barack Obama called University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino Wednesday afternoon to congratulate the coach and his team on winning the 2013 NCAA championship.

Obama told Pitino that it was an exciting game to watch and that he's built quite an impressive team over the past several years. The President also congratulated Pitino on his induction in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Obama said he and First Lady Michelle Obama were particularly proud of sophomore guard Kevin Ware and the way he handled his injury with grace. A little over a week ago, Michelle Obama had called Ware with a message of support. The President said he looks forward to congratulating the team during a White House visit.

Remarks were provided by the White House Press Secretary
