Therapy dog celebrated for helping patients recover

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- She's turning nine years old today, but her significant contributions to a local rehab center turned into a "paws" for celebration.

Madison became the first therapy dog for the Frazier Rehab Institute in 2007.  She is a golden retriever who knows over 40 different commands -- she can open and close doors and retrieve items from the refrigerator.

Madison works with patients to motivate their recovery, improve motor skills, and brighten the atmosphere at the facility.

As Recreation Therapist Jessica Mayse explains, "Madison's very popular around here.  And sometimes they forget to say hello to me."

Frazier also celebrated the birthday of a trainee dog, Charlie, who is learning the role of therapy dog from Madison.

IAMS Dog Food Corporation and donations to Jewish Hospital support the care Madison provides to patients.
