Former Hardin Co. teacher charged with sexually abusing student

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- A former Hardin County teacher faced a judge after being charged with sexually abusing a student at school.  Anthony Durrant was arraigned this morning and his bond was set at $25,000 full cash.

Detectives say the now former 6th grade history teacher was sexting with a student over the weekend.  Officials say he touched that student on the bottom at James T. Alton Middle School in Vine Grove on Friday.

Durrant was arrested on two charges, including sexual abuse of a 13-year-old on school property, and a second charge related to the text messages.

Police say over the weekend, more inappropriate behavior happened through text messages.  The child's parent found the messages and notified the school and authorities.

"Through the investigation we discovered (Durrant) broke those moral and ethical codes and that's why he was terminated," said Wright.

Wright says while this is not the first incident of sexual contact between and a teacher and student, it is the first incident involving a teacher allegedly sexting within the school district.

"And if it was done to my kid, he wouldn't be going to court or sitting at home right now," said Suzanne.

The incident is disturbing to parents like Harold Suzanne whose child attends the school.

"I'd just like to know how a teacher can do something like that to one of his students. You are supposed to be teaching. They are supposed to look up to you. And doing that to a child of any age, they are not going to learn from that, it's going to effect them for the rest of their lives," said Suzanne.
