Group pays medical debt for more than 1,000

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - More than 1,000 people in Kentucky have had medical debts paid by a nonprofit agency in New York.

The Rolling Jubilee Fund bought the debts and forgave them. The organization was founded by Occupy Wall Street protesters.

Organization Vice President Thomas Gokey says the goal of the project is "to buy and abolish personal debt."

The project, which began last fall, uses donations to purchase debt.

Gokey said letters have been mailed to the 1,064 people in the Louisville area whose debt has been forgiven.
