Clark County corrections officer fired, charged with pain pill theft

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- Criminal charges are filed against a former Clark County corrections officer.

Court records show 50-year-old Dennis Caraway admitted stealing pain pills from a woman's purse Wednesday.

It happened at the security checkpoint for the county courthouse in Jeffersonville.

He's due in court Friday.

The county sheriff fired Caraway late Wednesday.

He's charged with possession of a controlled substance and theft.

An affidavit says Caraway admitted taking the woman's pills to ease his chronic back pain.

The woman was passing through the security checkpoint at the Clark County Courthouse.

Clark County Sheriff Danny Rodden says the woman's purse was physically searched as it passed through the scanner -- and that's normal procedure whenever anything suspicious is detected.

That's when the corrections officer, Caraway, allegedly stole prescription narcotics from the bag.
