Unemployment rises in 60 Ky. counties in March

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky is seeing rising unemployment at the county level with the coalfields continuing to be plagued by widespread joblessness.

The Office of Employment and Training reported Thursday that joblessness worsened in 60 counties between March 2012 and 2013, improved in 54 and remained the same in six.

Magoffin County had the highest unemployment rate in the state at 18.3% in March. Leslie County was second at 17.2%, followed by Harlan County at 16.8% and Letcher County at 16.7%.

Unemployment in Bell, Jackson, Knott and Menifee counties ranged from 14.8% to 15.2%.

Woodford County recorded the lowest jobless rate at 6.1%, followed by Oldham County at 6.5% and Fayette County at 6.6%. Daviess, Franklin and Madison counties each reported 6.9% unemployment.
