LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Rick Pitino promised his championship team he would get a tattoo -- and Thursday afternoon only WDRB was there as the national championship coach left a local tattoo parlor.
But he wasn't getting inked. His equipment manager Vinnie Tatum got a tattoo, and Pitino was just there for support. But he added, "I'm definitely going to get it done."
Pitino will get a cardinal and the words "2013 champions" tattooed on his left shoulder. During a press conference Wednesday, Pitino vowed that he would get inked before Derby at a parlor on Bardstown Road. That's exactly where WDRB caught up with him Thursday afternoon.
"Vinnie's came out great," the coach told WDRB's John Lewis. "I wanted to see if he yelled." Apparently it didn't hurt too much. Pitino tells us Tatum "was on the phone most of the time."
Pitino says he has not worked out exactly when he'll be the one sitting in the chair, though he told reporters on Wednesday that it would be before the Derby. He says he's going to have to work out a time to get it on his schedule.
The tattoo will serve as another permanent reminder of Pitino's accomplishments. He will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame later this year, and is the only coach to lead two different teams to a national championship title.
