After focusing on troubling news like terrorism in Boston, it's always nice to get the opportunity to talk about a lighter, more positive subject. And yesterday's headlines delivered the perfect topic when University of Louisville basketball star Russ Smith announced that he'll be returning for his senior year instead of leaving early for the NBA.
Cardinal fans, of course, are rightfully excited. Smith was the sparkplug of a team that won the heart of the nation while reeling off 16 straight wins on the way to its 3rd national title. He was not only the team's leading scorer but also -- in many ways -- its public face, exhibiting a kind of fun-loving fearlessness that could only be described as "Russdiculous."
It was good to hear Smith say how much he loves playing with his teammates, and especially how important it is to him to graduate. And the team he's coming back to is still loaded with most of the cast that earned this year's title, which means talk of a repeat isn't out of the question.
Now, we get to watch him in action for another season. And this chance to develop his game for one more year could produce an even bigger NBA payday in 2014.
So get ready for another wild ride, Card fans. Mr. Smith is coming back. And that's sure to guarantee another "Russdiculous" season in the YUM! Center – and hopefully beyond.
