Jacob Conway resigns; accused Progress Kentucky members of McConnell recordings

Posted: Updated:

LOUSIVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Jacob Conway, the Democrat who accused Progress Kentucky members of the McConnell recordings, has confirmed that he has resigned from his executive committee seat with the Jefferson County Democratic Party.

Conway claimed Shawn Reilly and Curtis Morrison, who are affiliated with the group Progress Kentucky, bragged to him about how they recorded a meeting between U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell and his advisors.

Left-leaning Mother Jones magazine released the controversial recordings.

On the recording, you can faintly hear Sen. McConnell talk about using hardball tactics to go after any potential challenger.  "I assume most of you have played the, the game Whac-A-Mole?" (Laughter.) This is the Whac-A-Mole period of the campaign…when anybody sticks their head up, do them out," McConnell is heard saying.

Later an unidentified aide is heard discussing Ashley Judd's mental health issues as potential political fodder.  " …she's suffered some suicidal tendencies. She was hospitalized for 42 days when she had a mental breakdown in the '90s," a male voice said.

Conway says the party voted and accepted his resignation at their meeting Wednesday night.  Conway says he wants to focus on his business, which is an advertising and marketing company.

He was one year into his four-year term. The party can vote to fill his seat.

Conway says he was not pressured by anyone to step down. He says it was his own decision.  He says is still a Democrat and is still "active" in the party, but no longer holds a leadership position.
