Man dead in latest Fort Wayne police shooting

Posted: Updated:

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) -- Fort Wayne police have shot and killed one of two men who fled from officers during a traffic stop and are searching for the second man.

Police Chief Rusty York says the shooting occurred Saturday afternoon on the city's southeast side when the man being chased directed a gun at two officers. The man's name has not been released pending an autopsy. The names of the officers also are being withheld.

Police say the incident began with a routine traffic stop, but did not say what prompted the stop. The driver of the SUV that was pulled over also fled from officers and remained at large Sunday.

It's the city's third police shooting in as many months, and the second fatal one.
