LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Three-time Derby winning trainer Bob Baffert will not be adding a fourth Kentucky Derby win to his belt this year.
Baffert announced this morning that Govenor Charlie and Code West will not be entered in the race. That's after Govenor Charlie was on the track Monday morning after having foot trouble the past couple of weeks. He did not work, however, only jogged around, and afterward Baffert confirmed that not only Govenor Charlie but Code West were out.
"We will not have a starter in the Derby this year," Baffert said Monday. "It was, you know, just -- it didn't work out. But the horses, they looked good in training and all. But Govenor Charlie, he had a bit of a setback. Not too bad, but we just feel that you cannot have any kind of a hiccup or anything like that. So, it's a shame, he had a really good chance at that."
Baffert continued, "It's disappointing for the owners, but also, you know, you just have to think about...we want to be competitive, and if you're not competitive, they don't want to just run for the heck of it."
Baffert had previously announced that Power Broker would not run.
