Track officials excited for new section at Churchill Downs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The busiest days of the year for Churchill Downs are just days away and many of the best seats have been sold out for months.  As of just days before, the general admission spots were not the only ones still up for grabs.

Whether you have seen the twin spires more times than you can count or you have never been to a day at the races, there is a whole new point of view people are taking advantage of.

Section 110 is located on the first turn and replaced the Infield Club from previous years.  Churchill Downs Vice President of Racing Communications John Asher said the chance to sit in the green chairs in the new get-up is slimming by the minute for the biggest racing days of the year.

"It's the first pop up stadium seating we have never had that done before," said Asher.

Asher said the packages for the seats used to come for Oaks and Derby days combined, but they are now being sold separately.  He and others who know the turf say it's a new perspective.

"You have got the iconic first turn view of the twin spires and plus with the way that section is built, you have a pretty interesting view of the whole racetrack," Asher said.

Asher said the covered and uncovered seating packages have added bonuses, including all you can eat and drink included in the price of the ticket.

Asher said that includes alcoholic beverages for those who are of age.

"You're completely covered in that regard," said Asher.

Asher said betting windows, restrooms and food would be located inside the covered part of the new section.  Churchill Downs officials say it's one gamble they think will pay off.

"We are seeing how that works and we won't know until Oaks and Derby and get some feedback from some of the patrons," Asher said.

"We are pretty excited about it and we think it is going to be a good success."
Asher said there was also a big expansion called "The Plaza" which would be intriguing for general admission viewers.  For information on how to purchase tickets, click here.
