No peanuts or Cracker Jacks at May 10th Louisville Bats Game

Louisville, KY (WDRB) -- Peanuts and Cracker Jacks won't be for sale on Friday May 10th at the Louisville Bats game because it's Peanut Allergy Awareness Night. All peanut and peanut-based items will be removed from the concession stands.

Greg Galiette with the Louisville Bats says several items will be removed that night including, "Candies that have any kind of peanuts in them, German Roasted Nuts, any ice cream products that may have nuts sprinkled on them like a drumstick, ice cream products, things of that nature."

This will be the third year for the Peanut Allergy Awareness game. Family Allergy and Asthma and the Bats worked together to create a safe environment for people with peanut allergies.

As many as 15 million people are living with a daily, life threatening food allergy, including about one in 13 children. Allergists say avoiding the food is the only option.

Dr. Stephen Pollard with Family Allergy and Asthma says, "We've not had personally had patients here who have died. We read about it in literature, but we certainly have had severe life threatening reactions."

Galiette says, "We always try to make sure our ballpark is scrubbed down well, that the team is gone for at least a week to give us an opportunity to really clean the place and we always have it the first game back off of a road trip. That way, we know the stadium is clean. There is not any peanut dust lingering from the night before."

The Bats say in addition to medical staff, Family Allergy and Asthma staff will be at the game with epi pens on hand in case there's an emergency.

Galiette says, "We feel really good that kids who may have never had opportunity to set foot in our ballpark and experience the atmosphere of a live baseball game will have that opportunity."

The game starts at 6:35pm on May 10th.
