SLIDESHOW: U of L engineering students compete to make best solar-powered aircraft

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- It's a rite of spring for enterprising University of Louisville engineering students.

U of L's Conn Center for Renewable Energy Research sponsored the third annual solar flight.  They launched from Parkway Field off of Eastern Parkway.

The students say they made the bodies of the planes out of foam boards, and ordered the electronic parts.

Graduate student Daniel Porter explained, "We've perfected certain designs that allowed us to go 100 yards on the charge we needed, in roughly the amount of time we wanted.  So the center gave us money, we got some undergrad students, some grad students, came together, and they got it done.

The competition determines which teams built the best solar-powered aircraft.
