Shoppers at Dee's Crafts in Louisville spend time looking for the perfect accessory for their trip to Churchill Downs the first Saturday in May: a Derby hat.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- People are polishing off their Derby outfits with the perfect accessory. Derby is just three days away and last minute shoppers are looking for that staple accessory.
Dee's Crafts is getting busier by the day. Hundreds of people are sifting through flowers and feathers at the shop to put together their designs.
"It's something that you don't do, normally," said Mindi Watzeo, a Dee's customer. "Women used to wear hats all the time and they look beautiful, and this is the one time of year that we get to add another accessory on our heads."
There's a lot of concern about the possibility of rain in the weekend forecast, but people are finding ways around it.
"I needed a big hat and I wanted one that would double as an umbrella just in case we got unlucky, but I'm counting on the 10% chance of that not happening until after the races are over," said Leiah Hensley, who was taking the time to design her own hat.
Dee's owners say, surprisingly, the impending weather has not affected hat sales like it normally does. They expect to sell about 2,500 hats this season.
There is still time to work on your design, but hurry -- Dee's is taking orders through Thursday.
