Late Derby scratch: Black Onyx won't run

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- WDRB has learned that Black Onyx has been scratched from this year's Kentucky Derby.

According to a news release from Senior Director of Communications and Media Darren Rogers, Black Onyx stewards decided that the #1 slot in the starting gate will be left open in the Kentucky Derby starting gate and the remaining 19 horses in the Derby field will start from the post positions they drew in Wednesday's post draw.

Normally, when a horse is scratched, another horse would have started from that gate position, but the deadline for entries was May 1, and Fearless Kitten, the horse slated, to take Black Onyx's place was on the bubble in 21st place but was also scratched on Friday.
