Train and SUV collide west of New Albany

FLOYD COUNTY, Ind. (WDRB) -- An SUV and freight train collided in the 3300-block of Corydon Pike, also known as State Road 62, west of New Albany Friday evening.  The driver of the SUV was hurt.

The crash happened about 6:45 p.m., authorities said.  A family member of the car's driver told WDRB News she was injured and taken to University of Louisville Hospital.  She was expected to survive her injuries.

The train blocked SR 62, about one mile west of SR 111.

The impact of the crash smashed the SUV and took off the passenger side door as seen in WDRB News video.

Family members say the driver, whom they did not further identify, had just dropped off her granddaughter and was backing out of the driveway to leave.   The family says the train track is close to the driveway, and the woman collided with an oncoming train.

Floyd County Sheriff's officers and Georgetown firefighters responded to the scene, which involved a crossing just north of Corydon Pike.
