SMITHLAND, Ky. (AP and WDRB) -- A school bus carrying a high school sports team overturned just before 5 p.m. CDT Friday on U.S. 60 in far western Kentucky, injuring 21 people.

Officials at the scene said 28 people were aboard the bus, including 24 students and 4 adults from the Union County H.S. softball team in Morganfield, Ky.

Union Co. schools confirmed the 21 people hurt suffered non-life-threatening injuries.  Ambulances from several counties and a medical helicopter transported them to three Paducah, Ky., hospitals.

Law enforcement video images showed the bus rolled over onto its passenger side after it dropped into a ditch on the right side of U.S. 60, about three miles east of Smithland in Livingston County.

Police were diverting traffic as far back as four miles from the scene on U.S. 60.  A state police spokesman said the scene was at U.S. 60 and Silver Mine Road.

The accident remains under investigation.  Police had U.S. 60 closed at the scene as of 8:30 p.m. CDT.

Those on board the bus were en route to a game in Livington County, authorities said.
