Louisville, KY (WDRB) Technology upgrades have dramatically changed how professional landscapers get the job done. Sterling Riggs swapped gigs with a lawn care worker to see what it takes achieve the perfect lawn.
Speed, accuracy, and efficiency are the key components of being a successful lawn care professional.
The guys at Lawnco in Louisville make cutting the grass look extremely easy. But trying to keep this riding mower straight is not an easy task for a novice.
Casey Ryan has been a lawn care professional for 6 years and says it takes serious ambition.
"It's an extremely fast paced business. It's not for everyone but if you like to work outside and you don't mind getting your hands dirty. It's the place to be," said Ryan.
The trade has gotten less labor intensive in recent years. The riding mower's invention cut down on man power and increased the number of yards the crew mows a day. This crew averages 20 yards a day.
From mowing the grass to planting flowers, these guys just about do it all. And you must be prepared for unwanted critters at all times.
"Sometimes you come across bees. When you are trimming a bush, you don't know they are in there and then you make one cut and then they are coming out after you and then that's all she wrote," said Ryan.
At the end of the day, I learned I need a little more practice on the mower to achieve the perfect cut.
Here's the good news; if you mess up a lawn, it's kind of like a bad haircut. It will always grow back.
