LOUISVILLE, Ky.  (WDRB) -- A Shelbyville woman is recovering after being freed from a horrific hostage situation in which police say she was sexually and physically abused.

Police say 48-year-old Gary Harris held his girlfriend at gun and knife point in his Shelbyville apartment for five days.

According to police documents, Harris made the woman sit in scolding hot water, and submit to sexual acts.  In addition, the victim claims she was hit in the head with a hammer and threatened with a machete.

Police rescued the woman from the Bland Avenue residence on Tuesday, May 7, and they immediately put her in the care of a sexual assault nurse.

Harris is currently in custody, facing charges of domestic violence, endangerment, unlawful imprisonment, and first degree sodomy.

The victim's family tells WDRB News that she is doing "okay" considering what she experienced.

The Shelbyville Police Department declined to comment on the case.
