Safety fence being built as construction begins on new bridge

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The way is being cleared for construction to begin on the new Downtown Crossing.

Signs of progress are already visible, with work under way on the safety zone at Waterfront Park.

Installation of the safety fence will continue today, and the fence is expected to be in place by Wednesday.

The temporary safety fence is going up in the area immediately surrounding the Kennedy Bridge, including the area just east of the Kennedy where the new bridge will be built. The River Road sidewalk will remain open throughout construction, with continuous access from the west to the east portions of the park.

Park features within the safety zone, including park benches, picnic tables and light posts are being relocated.

Some trees in the immediate area will be removed.

Under an agreement with Walsh Construction, Waterfront Park will be compensated for the trees.

The Lincoln Memorial parking lot, the Orange Lot and the children's play area will all remain open. Only the Purple Lot will close.
