Heavy rains flood streets, homes in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) -- Overnight storms that dumped up to six inches of rain on Fort Wayne left some streets in the northeastern Indiana city flooded and motorists stranded in their vehicles.

Fort Wayne Fire Department Assistant Chief Jim Murua tells The Journal Gazette his crews had to rescue some motorists from cars surrounded by high waters. He says the flooding also forced the evacuation of residents from one apartment complex.

National Weather Service meteorologist Evan Bentley says rainfall Friday and early Saturday reached four to six inches in the Fort Wayne area.

Bentley says the deluge pushed Spy Run Creek to a record crest of 14.57 feet shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday. That's nearly a foot above the previous record set in 2010.
