Cleaning up Floyds Fork Creek

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Tires, a girl's bicycle, and garbage bags full of trash is what volunteers picked up this morning during the Floyd Fork Creek Sweep.

Many of them used canoes or kayaks to navigate the creek, picking up trash and metal debris along the way.

This is the 22nd year for the annual event.

The president of Floyds Fork Environmental Association says it's a problem many people overlook.

"A lot of people don't think about it but when someone throws something out their car window, with every rain it gets closer and closer to the creek. And people here throw things out ... they dump. They illegally dump," says Teena Halbig, Floyds Fork Associate.

Organizers say over the past two decades, volunteers have picked up 120 tons of garbage from the creek.
